On January 18, 2024, Lithium Americas and the Humboldt County community gathered for a ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate the opening of the new Lithium Americas Winnemucca Office. The office has space for up to 30 people and is a small representation of moving Thacker Pass towards production to creating a North American lithium battery supply chain to support the clean energy transition.

“We’re proud to have a growing presence in Winnemucca and Humboldt County,” said Hugh Broadhurst, General Manager, Thacker Pass. “Thacker Pass is founded on a decade of feedback through community engagement. We’re fortunate to have exceptional support from the community and partners like the Humboldt County Commission, the City of Winnemucca, Sawtooth, our mining partner, Bechtel, our construction partner, the Humboldt County Chamber of Commerce, the Humboldt County Sherriff’s Office, the Winnemucca Police Department, the Bureau of Land Management, the Fort McDermitt Tribe, the Humboldt County School District, Great Basin College, Humboldt County Memorial Hospital, and so many other businesses and neighbors across this wonderful community that we call home.”

Making a positive impact in the communities where Lithium Americas employees work and live is one of our main priorities. Thacker Pass is currently in the construction phase, with major earthworks in preparation for heavy construction planned for the second half of 2024. At peak construction the project will employ approximately 1,800 workers and will generate positive for the Humboldt County region. According to an economic impact assessment completed by the University of Nevada, Reno:

  • In Humboldt County, construction of both Phase 1 and 2 is estimated to generate approximately $725 million of economic activity annually for each year of construction.
  • In the state of Nevada, it’s expected that every $1 the Company invests on Phase 1 and 2 capital construction will generate an additional 76 cents of spending, and every direct job created during construction will generate an additional six jobs.
  • Over the life of the operation, Thacker Pass is expected to generate at least $2.2 billion in annual economic impact for the State of Nevada and over $2 billion in annual economic impact for Humboldt County.
  • Every 1 direct job created by Lithium Americas construction investment will generate an additional 1.5 local jobs during construction.

Lithium Americas is actively investing in the future of the Humboldt County community and has supported over 20 local community organizations in the past year. “As our project grows, so will our support and involvement in local community organizations,” said Broadhurst. “We’re building a 40+ year operation and envisioning what the future 10, 20 and 40 years from now looks like.”

Broadhurst also shared several Thacker Pass project milestones during his remarks at the ribbon cutting ceremony, including:

  • LAC construction crews logged more than 138,000 work-hours without a lost time incident. This milestone is a reflects our dedication to every employee to working safely.
  • The Lithium Technical Development Center in Reno was recently awarded the ISO 9001:2015 Quality Management Systems certification, which is a globally recognized standard, demonstrating our commitment to quality in the development of lithium products.
  • The Company’s temporary full-service housing facility in Winnemucca for construction workers is called the Workforce Hub. Earthworks for the facility have been completed and housing modules are currently arriving daily.
  • The Company has secured a lease for the Transloading Terminal (TLT) land west of Winnemucca.

The LAC Winnemucca Office was constructed by Big G Construction and is owned by Javier Rivera.
